🌈 Some Things We Once Believed: Why Change Is Possible (Happy Pride Month!)

It’s easy to feel disheartened when you see how the world still treats members of the LGBTQ+ community. The fight for equal rights, for dignity, for the simple right to exist without judgment — it's far from over.

But history reminds us of something powerful: human beliefs evolve. And just because something is widely believed now doesn’t mean it will stay that way forever.

Here are a few examples of beliefs we once accepted as truth — until time, science, empathy, and courage proved them wrong.

---

🖐️ Left-handed people were once seen as cursed or “wrong”

Centuries ago, left-handedness was associated with mental illness, rebellion, even evil spirits. Children were forced to write with their right hands. Today, we know it's just a natural variation — no more, no less.

👩‍🦱 Women were told they were “less than”

There was a time when women were denied education, land ownership, voting rights, and even the right to speak publicly. Today, women lead nations, run corporations, and win Nobel Prizes. Still not perfect — but far from where we started.

🧠 Mental illness was seen as possession

Before we had psychology and neuroscience, people thought mental illness was caused by demons or bad karma. Many were punished or hidden away. Now, we know better. We’ve started building systems of support, not shame.

🌍 People believed the Earth was flat

This one sounds almost funny now — but it was once so deeply believed that people were punished for saying otherwise. And yet, truth prevailed.

---

Each of these beliefs was once normal, mainstream, and unchallenged. And yet, slowly, minds changed. Laws changed. Societies changed.

So if today’s world still debates whether LGBTQ+ people should marry, adopt, or simply be respected — don’t lose hope.

Because change is not just possible — it’s inevitable.

We’ve seen it before, and we’ll see it again. Because every generation has its fight for justice. And one day, our children might look back at this time the same way we now look at the eras of slavery, witch hunts, and segregation — with sadness, and disbelief that such injustice ever existed.

---

To all our LGBTQ+ friends, family, and community members:
You are not a phase. You are not a sin.
You are not wrong for existing. You are a beautiful part of the human spectrum — just like every left-handed person, every woman, every once-misunderstood soul in history.

💛 Change is coming. We just have to keep going.
